JUNIOR LEAGUE OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA TO HOST CHILDREN’S HEALTH FAIR First annual interactive, family-friendly event to feature Kids in the Kitchen anti-obesity initiative.
March 1, 2010 (McLean, Va).– The Junior League of Northern Virginia (JLNV) will hold its first annual Children’s Health Fair to celebrate National Nutrition Month on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Giant Food parking lot at the Kings Park Shopping Center located at 8970 Burke Lake Road, Springfield, VA 22151. The Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) Children’s Health Fair is an event that encourages kids to live a healthy lifestyle by providing resources for child based exercise and nutrition education and recipes for healthy eating habits.
The Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative aims to make an impact in addressing urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition in communities across the country. By educating the public at a grassroots level, the Junior League of Northern Virginia will offer practical solutions that families might easily adopt.
The health fair will include fitness demonstrations, cooking demos, interactive booths and many other fun activities. Participating children will have an opportunity to take store tours through Giant to learn how to select healthy foods and enter a drawing to win a Wii Fit. Exhibitors include Giant Food, Inova Health System, Northern Virginia Healthy Kids Coalition, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, Jennifer Hankins Health, Amerigroup and Top Kick Martial Arts Center.
“The JLNV is pleased to expand our KITK programming to a larger cross-section of the community,” said Nene Spivy, JLNV president. “Our Children’s Health Fair not only addresses the childhood obesity epidemic in an entertaining and educational way, but also demonstrates how timely the childhood obesity issue is with the recent announcement of First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move’ campaign. The JLNV has always had our pulse on the needs of the Northern Virginia community, and our first annual KITK Children’s Health fair advances our mission and focus of preparing area children for success.”
There is no charge to attend the KITK Children’s Health Fair, and all ages are welcome. For more information call 703-442-4163 or e-mail kitk@jlnv.org.
