JUNIOR LEAGUE OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA LAUNCHES PERIOD PANTRIES TO COMBAT LOCAL PERIOD POVERTY

Fairfax, Virginia, April 30, 2024 – Over the weekend, the Junior League of Northern Virginia (JLNV) marked a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to community service by launching three local period pantries across Northern Virginia. These pantries, located at Springfield Family Resource Center, Culmore Family Resource Center, and Women Giving Back, are designed to address the critical issue of period poverty—affecting an estimated 20% of women in the local area.

Impact and Significance of the Period Pantries
The opening events, attended by local leaders and community advocates, including Virginia Majority Leader Charniele Herring, Delegate Kathy Tran, Delegate Atoosa Reaser, and Dr. Ricardy Anderson from the Fairfax County School Board, underscored the
community’s united front against period poverty. These pantries will provide essential menstrual hygiene products free of charge to those in need, ensuring dignity and health are accessible to all women and girls in the community.

Quotes from JLNV Leadership JLNV President Michelle Freeman expressed the importance of the initiative, stating,
“These period pantries are more than just a resource—they are a statement that we, as a community, recognize and act upon the basic needs of all women. It’s about ensuring dignity, promoting health, and removing barriers.”

President-Elect Erica Gouse Bledsoe also highlighted the collaborative effort involved: “This project reflects the strength of partnerships and community solidarity. Thanks to the support of our members and donors, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals.”

Reflecting on the initiative’s broader goals on social media, Delegate Atoosa Reaser, shared, “This resource provides access to necessary products and signifies that here in Loudoun, there is no shame or embarrassment attached to menstruation, only support and acceptance.”
